Frequently Asked Questions

Horizon Europe Rankings & EU Research Funding

Why is my university not listed?

Rankings display the top 100 universities by the selected metric. If your university is not listed, it may be ranked below the top 100, or it may not have participated in Horizon Europe projects during the period covered by our data. Additionally, only Higher Education Institutions (HES) are included in these rankings.

How is funding calculated?

Total funding is calculated as the sum of all EU contributions (ec_contribution) received by each university across all Horizon Europe projects in which it participated.

This includes funding received both as a coordinator and as a participant. The amount reflects the EU's contribution to the university's portion of each project, as reported in the official CORDIS database.

What does "Coordination Rate" mean?

Coordination rate is the percentage of projects where a university served as the coordinator. It's calculated as: (Number of coordinated projects / Total number of projects) × 100.

Universities must have participated in at least 20 projects to qualify for a coordination rate. This metric indicates how often a university takes a leadership role in Horizon Europe projects.

Can I get deeper analysis or custom rankings?

Yes, we offer custom analysis services for institutions, research organizations, or policymakers. This includes:

  • Detailed institutional reports
  • Custom filtering and analysis
  • Historical trend analysis
  • Comparative studies across institutions or countries

Please contact us at info@horizonrankings.eu to discuss your requirements and pricing.

How often are rankings updated?

Rankings are updated once per month based on the latest CORDIS data releases from the European Commission. We process new data as soon as it becomes available and recalculate all rankings to ensure accuracy.

Do these rankings measure research quality?

No. These rankings measure participation in Horizon Europe projects, not research quality, teaching excellence, or overall academic reputation. A university's position reflects its engagement with European research funding programs, which is influenced by many factors including institutional strategy, research priorities, and network connections.

Can I download the data?

The underlying data is publicly available from the European Commission's CORDIS website. We process and aggregate this data to create rankings, but the source data can be downloaded directly from CORDIS.

What if my university has multiple PICs (Participant Identification Codes)?

In the case of universities using more than one Participant Identification Code (PIC), there may be a slight inaccuracy in the data. In that case, universities should contact us at info@horizonrankings.eu to consolidate their data.
